At Martha and Zach’s wedding, our pastor Reed Jolley quoted a passage from “The Four Loves” by C.S. Lewis. It was so powerful, I was nodding and “hmm”ing up front with the bridal party. Here’s the quote:
“Love anything and your heart will be wrung and
possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping
it intact, you must give it to no one, not even an
animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and
little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up
safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But
in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it
will change. It will not be broken; it will become
unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. The only
place outside Heaven where you can be perfectly safe
from all the dangers of love is Hell”
I’d love to hear your thoughts on it!
VERY powerful! Glad you posted it. I believe it’s true.
Thanks, Marlene,
In all that went on that evening, I had forgotten this. It’s good to read it and think about it again, because it is very true. Blessings to you today!
That Lewis knew what he was talking about, didn’t he. I too had forgotten about this reading. Thanks for reminding me.!
That is so true. How easy it would be to build a wall of resistance because the thought of more pain and loss seems so unbearable…only to discover that it was in the pain that God became real and trust took on a deeper dimension. It is best to open yourself up to whatever God brings to us and trust him for the outcome. Love, mom
Is it true that Lewis himself built a wall of resistance?
‘Tis a great quote tho’.
